Orgame / Argamum is located on the shore of the Razelm-Golovița lagoon complex, in the south-eastern extremity of Cape Dolojman – a high promontory that separates the waters of Lake Razelm from those of Lake Golovița.
Argamon is the oldest settlement on Romanian territory attested in an ancient source, dating from the beginning of the 6th century BC: Hecateu from Miletus. It was founded by Greek colonists from Asia Minor, towards the middle of the century. In the 1st century after Christ, the fortress came under Roman rule, from then on named Argamum and being a port of call for navigators on the Byzantium-Tyras route. For five centuries, the citadel continued to prosper and develop. Legend has it that it is one of the places where the Argonauts stopped on their way home, after finding the golden fleece.
